Two Separate Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Ships Reported Missing subsequent to Leaving Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated sailboats carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Missions Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine sailors, per a military release.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island grapples with widespread nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with suitable safety systems and communication devices," an official for the convoy stated.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their consular staff.
"The group is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.
That boat, called "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Larger Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.
The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.
Diplomatic measures have increased over the past months, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complicated state of diplomatic ties.
In response to previous comments, a senior government figure declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the vessels and ensure the security of the crews.
To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
