New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"My choice was based on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
