The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
