Weather experts have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Readings are expected to be chilly, meaning additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Activated

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
