LA Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just Days Following Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with abnormally high conditions for late February.
Record-Setting Heat
By Friday afternoon, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, per data from the National Weather Service. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded just last year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on official charts for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Authorities cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat arrives just after a powerful storm system that pummeled the region last week. That event unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, causing mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead some relief will arrive. The heat were forecast to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by Friday night.
Other locales that experienced ninety degrees featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to see the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can see readings in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the week ahead.
