Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
