People have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the plan.

A prominent representative familiar with the talks said that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the day's discussions ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Talks

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict administration of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"Once the night comes, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported additional dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the southern area, medics reported.
