Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
