A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us locate the video.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
