Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, demons, and sinister influences expanding in influence within the city.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will split off from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

Hence, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

Per the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose passing started the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to auction.

Casimir then cleared his debts and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the team reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that control the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
